UMC expects this quarter to start the commercial supply of 14-nanometer chips
The company United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has published the report for the fourth quarter of 2016. Largest contract manufacturer of semiconductor products received for three months revenue of 1.19 billion dollars. The report noted that capacity utilization was 94%, and 22% of income was obtained by production according to the norms of 28 nm. This year, UMC expects to increase the productivity of their factories producing 28-nanometer products, to 10,000 wafers per month. Simultaneously, the manufacturer completes the development of more sophisticated 14-nanometer FinFET technology. The release of commercial products based on this technology, it expects to begin in the current quarter.
This step is for UMC special importance, as the Taiwanese company is not entitled to transfer its most advanced technology to the joint venture, which located in mainland China. With the development of 14-nanometer technology, 28-nanometer technology loses its status as the most advanced and can be submitted 12X Fab in Xiamen, commissioned in November last year. Thus, the mill, designed for plates with a diameter of 300 mm, can meet the growing demand of local customers for 28-nanometer chips. Now the factory produces the chip according to the norms of 40 nm. The yield rate of products is 99%.
