Snapdragon 450 — budget first 14-nanometer system-on-chip Qualcomm, which is actually very similar to the Snapdragon 625
Qualcomm today introduced a single-chip system Snapdragon 450. This is the first 14-nanometer SoC manufacturer for the lower price segment.
Despite the fact that this solution belongs to the family of Snapdragon 400, its parameters it is more like the younger members of the family Snapdragon 600. First, it uses GPU Adreno 506, as in the Snapdragon 625 and 626. Second, eight cores Cortex-A53 operate at a frequency of 1.8 GHz, which again is closer to the performance of the Snapdragon 625.
Overall Snapdragon 450 most similar to the Snapdragon 625. Here the same modem (X9 LTE), the same memory support (LPDDR3 and eMMC 5.1), the same maximum supported screen resolution (Full HD).
Except for slightly lower CPU frequency, the new SoC is different from her sister-enabled cameras. If the Snapdragon 625 can work with modules with resolution up to 24 MP, Snapdragon 450 option is limited to 13 MP. However, it is worth noting that these data are presented on the page with a description of the parameters. The press release also said that Snapdragon 450 can operate with dual resolution camera at 13 MP or with one resolution up to 21 MP.
In addition, the younger a single-chip system is not able to record video in 4K is limited to Full HD, but it’s clearly an artificial limitation, to somehow breed similar solutions in different segments. The new platform, of course, supports the technology 3.0 Quick Charge.
It is expected that the first device with the new SOC system will be available by the end of the year.
