Qualcomm and Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport expanded strategic cooperation
Qualcomm Technologies and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport this week announced the expansion of cooperation. The cooperation provides for the continued development and testing of high-speed wireless connectivity and wireless power for Formula One cars.
The list of technologies of interest to our partners, includes 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, 802.11 ad Wi-Fi, 5G New Radio (NR), C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) and Qualcomm WiPower.
In 2015 the company held the first testing technology of 802.11 ac Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz band. This was followed by joint development and testing of channel Swazi with a car, using for the data transmission technology 802.11 ad Wi-Fi in the 60 GHz band. The developers managed to get the real bandwidth of 1.5 GB/s , 3.5 times more than the rate of 802.11 ac Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz band. Moreover, the tests showed that the simultaneous use of the bands 5 GHz and 60 GHz allows to increase the capacity to almost 2 GB/s.
As for wireless power, as has been said, Qualcomm Technologies and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport intend to use the technology WiPower. According to partners, the replacement of wired contacts in remote places wireless interface will simplify and speed up disassembly and Assembly of machine parts during repair after accidents on the track.
