New Qualcomm sensors enable fingerprint scan through the display, glass and metal
The event Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017 Qualcomm chose to announce the fingerprint of the new generation solutions. Based on the use of ultrasound, these solutions include sensors to scan the prints through the display, glass and metal, sensors for gesture recognition and withdrawal of the device from the sleep mode. In addition, the first commercial integrated mobile ultrasound solution for measuring heart rate and blood flow, designed for authentication on mobile devices.
A sensor for scanning across the display works with OLED displays with a thickness of 1.2 mm. Qualcomm Sensors to scan fingerprints using glass and metal work with glass surfaces up to a thickness of 800 microns and aluminum up to a thickness of 525 µm. They are significantly superior to the solution of the previous generation, designed for glass and metal surfaces with thickness up to 400 microns. Sensors can be integrated into the system on mobile platforms, Qualcomm Snapdragon, or on other platforms. In particular, they are compatible with Snapdragon SoC 660 and 630.
Sensors to scan fingerprints through the glass and metal will be available in the OEM channels this month, and the appearance of the first devices with this sensor is expected in the first half of 2018. A sensor for scanning across the display will be available to OEMs in the fourth quarter of 2017.
