Kopin and Goertek presented a reference sample of the gear VR headset, which is twice smaller and lighter than existing
The company Kopin, in her words, «opened the whole era of virtual reality». The countdown of the new era begun by the release of the reference sample of the gear VR headset, which is twice smaller and lighter than existing ones. Development, done in conjunction with the Goertek, called Elf VR.
The manufacturer notes that the traditional approach led to the fact that the existing VR headset turned out to be difficult and cumbersome, and provide or image quality is poor. Delays and low refresh rate make the headset uncomfortable to use for more than ten minutes.
Elf VR used light and compact microdisplay Lightning OLED. They are characterized by a resolution of 2048 x 2048 pixels and a density of 2940 pixels per inch, and the refresh rate is 120 Hz, thereby the above-described problems are eliminated.
Another advantage of the panels is low power consumption that makes it possible to increase battery time and reduce heat dissipation.
Optical system Elf VR turned out significantly thinner and lighter than the existing set. The developers offer two options: with a field angle of 70° (more suitable for movies) and with field angle 100° (for deep dives).
At the same time announced that the company Kopin, BOE Technology Group and Yunan OLiGHTEK Opto-Electronic Technology agreed to allocate up to $ 150 million for the project, which will produce microdisplay for AR and VR headsets. The plant will be built in China in the next two years.
