HPE showed a prototype of the computer in which the main role is played by memory and not CPU
Modern computing is built on the concept in which a Central place is given to the processor executing the thread. Commands and data are stored in memory. This is not the only possible architecture, and it is characterized by certain disadvantages. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) demonstrated a prototype demonstrate the efficiency of the other concept, called «computing, managed memory» (Memory-Driven Computing). It is easy to guess that in this architecture, a key component is the memory. Allegedly, this allows us to obtain unprecedented performance and efficiency.
The need for a new architecture is associated with an increase in the number of devices connected to the Network. According to the forecast by Gartner, by 2020 their number will reach 20.8 billion pieces, and systems in modern architecture will be more difficult to cope with the increasing flow of data.
The prototype, created in the framework of the project The Machine for the first time showed the joint work of all the major blocks of the new architecture. It the compute nodes connected to the shared memory, optimized OS based on the Linux running on a dedicated SoC, optical and optoelectronic connections including the module X1, built on technologies of Photonics, and software.
Simulation in the development process of the prototype showed that the transition to the new architecture will increase performance by several orders of magnitude. Run the test applications showed an increase of up to 8000 times at different loads. The company hopes that the increase in the number of nodes and amount of memory will allow for an even greater effect.
