The representative of Samsung SDI in an interview with The Korea Herald stated that the company will be able to start production of a completely safe solid-state batteries for smartphones a year or two.
He added that competitors LG Chem are at about the same stage of development of the technology. Solid-state batteries should be replaced on the market lithium-ion batteries. Made of solid electrolytes they are less prone to fires and explosions. The batteries usually explode when the fluid inside leaks out and comes into contact with air or water.
Solid state batteries over time will also begin to use electric vehicles, but it will be preceded by a long test, because there is a direct relationship with the safety of driver and passengers.
